"If you ever wanted to know about the beginnings of baseball in America and its connection to Petersburg, this is your book. It is the most complete compendium of knowledge, history, personal stories and statistics that you will ever find. While it is an encyclopedia of information, it's so much more than just the runs batted in, the strikeouts and the players' personal percentages. You'll learn who showed up for a tryout wearing a skirt, or who built a grandstand on his own property next to the ballfield so his customers could pay less than the full ticket price, he sold popcorn too, but eventually was put out of business by the city fathers! The stories are engaging, even for those readers who don't feast on baseball. You'll be surprised how endeared you become with some of these Hall of Famers!" - Charles Finley

I chose this book after I found that a former class mate had written it. The book is about baseball in Virginia . It included little known facts about the early days of baseball in my hometown of Petersburg and my new home in Lynchburg. I was intrigued by how the railroads played an intricle part in moving players and spectators up and down the line. I thought my husband who is the sports fan in our family would really enjoy it since he played in leagues in Petersburg, attended games while in Richmond, and who never misses a home game for the Lynchburg Hillcats. Even though being an Ohio boy who has remained loyal to the Cleveland Indians by never missing the Indians' farm team when in town playing the Hillcats. I enjoyed hearing about the ball fields near where I lived and remember my dad going down to the fielda at night and watching from the car. That was a memory that surfaced while reading that made me feel closer than ever to my dad who has been gone for more than thirty years. .I do believe I will buy some more of these books for the kids and grandkids for Christmas gifts. I recomend this book to anyone who wants to go back to an slower time when the question was not what is on television tonight, but was whose playing tonight.Product details

Baseball in Petersburg The Virginia League and Beyond Larry C Toombs 9780875171395 Books Reviews
Larry Toombs spent a year searching old newspapers to find impresssive facts about the history of baseball in Virginia and the south. Old timers still talk about the great Ted Williams, and sure enough he played in Petersburg his rookie season for the Red Sox. Along with Williams, other Hall of Famers Jimmy Foxx, Lefty Grove, and future American League President Joe Cronin played that spring day in 1939. Since baseball traveled by railroad in the early years, the National League champion Boston Bean Eaters stopped by 1893 and won a pair of 1-0 games.Petersburg pitcher Willie Quarles pitched both games that weekend for the local team. The number of future major league stars topped more than a dozen in 1951 when the Negro League Hodges-Campanella All-Stars visited with Willie Mayes,Roy Campanella,Gil Hodges, and Montie Irwin all trotting on the field. With the opening of the beautiful Petersburg Complex many present major league players compete in the Coastal Plain League In Petersburg. Toombs book is a fun and enjoyable read.
