IN THE ENDLESS SKIES OF VENUS ...

Venus - second planet from the Sun. In the crushing depths of its atmosphere lies a hellish, dimly-lit world of baked rock and furnace-like temperatures, forever hidden beneath thick clouds of sulphuric acid.
But high above the clouds, the sky is blue and clear, and a fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers circle endlessly on the high-altitude winds, providing a welcome staging post for crews on long space voyages.
For Clare Foster, a lieutenant in the US Astronautics Corps on her first tour of duty on board the USSV Langley, flying on Venus brings new challenges to be mastered. But soon Clare finds herself enmeshed in the darker side of life on board the carrier, and a sequence of events in which the terrifying fury of the planet will be unleashed ...

Acid Sky eBook Mark Anson

I read Below Mercury first, and was very disappointed. I decided to give Anson another chance and I'm glad I did. This story is filled with more depth of character. Whereas Below Mercury was very detailed driven, Acid Sky balances out the detail with character development. Most of this review is based in comparison to Below Mercury.

This story gives you more insight into the character's personalities, what drives them and why they make the decisions they make. This causes you to care about the outcome of the story, as opposed to his other book. There were a few times I actually caught myself holding my breath as I waited for the outcome. The only time the story wavered was towards the end. I was reminded of an over-the-top Hollywood blockbuster, as soon as you feel the climatic action sequence is over, there is one final showdown. This turned me off a bit, but by no means ruined the story for me.

If you're considering reading this and Below Mercury, I'd read Acid Sky first. It'll at least give you some background of Clare, background that is missing in Below Mercury. Hopefully, Anson is working on a book that tells what happens to Clare between the two books, while she is flying deep space around Mars.

Acid Sky eBook Mark Anson Reviews

Great plot, compelling main character and lots of tension. It is genuine science fiction ( as opposed to fantasy) with an interesting setting in Venus's orbit. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
Not bad, but the fact that the story unfolded above Venus was mostly secondary to the drama. There was a lot of detail about the spacecraft but there was not much "otherwordly" about the narrative. The action picked up in the second half, though, and I was pleased with the outcome. I will probably continue reading the series.

There were a few editing mistakes but not enough to distract from the story. And I realize the author is British, but it was disconcerting to hear a Kentucky farm girl talk about her "Mum" and report fuel state in "tonnes".
This story was very interesting and kept me up when I should have been sleeping. Using a space station as a home base was ingenious. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the different planets and assorted space craft. It was a little depressing to consider that drugs might still be influencing some people.
I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.
I gave it this rating for store line and character development. Very detailed and comprehensive in background and plot. Enjoyed and looking forward to reading Below Mercury.
Much like the previously-published sequel entitled Below Mercury, Acid Sky is a fantastic novel with very interesting technology and well-developed characters. I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks it might be an enjoyable read, as I don't think you'll be disappointed! Also, after you're done, go pick up Below Mercury too!
Another great book ! I read Below Mercury first, but that is not a problem as Acid Sky is totally standalone. The author has a knack to evoke pictures in my mind, it is as if I was in a movie theater - may be the added diagrams help in that matter, but in any case I felt I was out there in space above Venus throughout the book. Just to imagine living on such a spaceship gives me goosebumps !
This story combines hard sci-fi (although not as much sci-fi as in Below Mercury) with the politics and dangers of sexual assault in the military. The setting in the skies above Venus was less important than the setting on Mercury in the later story, but still played a role in the development of the plot. I will happily read more from this author and hope he creates more stories featuring this strong female lead character.
